Insomnia Severity Quiz

This quiz is based on the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) — a validated, widely-used clinical screening tool for insomnia developed by Charles Morin. It is used in research and clinical practice to assess insomnia type, severity, and impact. Your score will indicate whether your sleep difficulties are subclinical (mild/occasional) or suggest clinically significant insomnia that may benefit from professional evaluation.

Disclaimer: This quiz is a screening tool for informational purposes only — it is not a clinical diagnosis. A score suggesting clinical insomnia should prompt a conversation with a healthcare provider, not serve as a self-diagnosis.

Insomnia Severity Index (ISI)

For each question, rate the past 2 weeks. Rate from 0 (None/Not at all) to 4 (Very Severe/Extremely).

1. Difficulty falling asleep:

2. Difficulty staying asleep (waking during the night):

3. Waking up too early and not being able to get back to sleep:

4. How satisfied/dissatisfied are you with your current sleep pattern?

5. How noticeable to others do you think your sleep problem is in terms of impairing your quality of life?

6. How worried/distressed are you about your current sleep problem?

7. To what extent do you consider your sleep problem to interfere with your daily functioning (e.g. daytime fatigue, mood, concentration, performance at work)?

ISI Score Interpretation

Score Interpretation
0–7No clinically significant insomnia
8–14Subthreshold insomnia
15–21Moderate clinical insomnia
22–28Severe clinical insomnia

The ISI has a sensitivity of 86.1% and specificity of 87.7% for detecting insomnia disorder when using a cutoff of 10 (Morin et al., 2011). It is widely used in clinical trials of CBT-I as a primary outcome measure.
